Four Tips on Selecting Custom Kitchen Cabinetry

Remodeling a kitchen most often includes new cabinets. And what a difference they make! Here are some tips on selecting kitchen cabinets that will last through the years and provide beauty and organization to your kitchen.

1 - Choose what type of material you want your kitchen cabinets to be made of; whether it is wood, wood veneer, glass, or eco-friendly choices like bamboo, formaldehyde-free MDF, or wheat board. Hard woods like oak, ash, maple, and alder will not be as prone to scratches and dents as softer woods, which include cherry and walnut. All can be finished in a variety of ways.

2 - Select a color and tone that complements the rest of your décor. For example, if your kitchen is dark, selecting dark wood will make the room seem more compressed. If your walls are already white, having white cupboards and countertops may look a bit too bleached out.

3 - Decide what items you use most in your kitchen, and have your White Plains kitchen remodel company integrate custom storage for these items in very handy locations. If, for example, you frequently use tablecloths, you can have a pull out tablecloth hanger built into the cupboards near the kitchen table. Wine storage can be built into your kitchen to provide aesthetic as well as practical storage.

4 - If you're wondering how well made a cabinet system is, check the corners of the drawers. It is a high quality piece if the corners are dove tailed (meaning they are notched in at the corners in two or more places, so that they fit together like puzzle pieces). One of the worst types of kitchen drawer construction includes cutting a grove along the bottom of a drawer and inserting a piece of compressed wood; these types of kitchen drawers are not built to last.
